Skin Irritation Testing
Skin irritation is defined as reversible damage to the skin caused by exposure to a particular chemical. The skin irritation test is performed to detect chemicals and their mixtures that may cause moderate skin irritation.
Skin irritation, unlike skin corrosion, is a milder and reversible condition. The skin irritation potential of a chemical or cosmetic product is an important issue for many processes such as the use, packaging and transportation of that product.
The skin irritation test is an in vitro test method performed on a reconstructed human epidermis (RhE) model. As a general procedure, the test is based on the epidermis model's exposure to cosmetic products for a certain period of time.
According to the test results, samples that reduce the viability below 50% are classified as irritants, while samples that do not reduce the viability are not classified as irritants.
