Product Type 5: Drinking water

Product Type 5: Drinking water

Products used in the disinfection of drinking water (both for humans and animals).

The product type includes disinfectants used by waterworks and disinfectants used locally by the user prior to drinking low quality water or applying to pets. Three main types of disinfection processes can be distinguished in water plants:

• Primary disinfection: The main aim is to kill the vast majority of microorganisms to prevent them from disrupting the next steps in the treatment process (clogging of filters/membranes); in many cases, before removal of organic matter and excess inorganic components (Fe, Mn);

• Residual disinfection: routine practice to maintain antimicrobial potential in the delivery system;

• Standby disinfection: High dose application to clean a contaminated system or when commissioning a new system.

The mode of action of most of the disinfectants applied is based on their strong oxidizing properties.

Drinking water disinfectants can also be used locally for disinfection of drinking water in case of poor sanitary conditions, e.g. during travel and temporary stays in developing countries

Human exposure

People can be directly exposed to disinfectants when applying disinfectant in the water treatment process and through direct contact with water from the distribution system. With the use of disinfected water, people may be exposed to disinfectants through direct skin contact with water, as well as by drinking the water and inhaling and swallowing aerosols in the shower, e.g. during bathing and other hygienic activities.
