Product Type 13: Working or cutting fluid preservatives

Metalworking fluid preservatives are used to control microbial degradation of metalworking fluids. Such fluids are used in the metal forming, metal cutting industries and in the electroplating industry. The largest quantities of metalworking fluids are used in the metal cutting industry, and a large proportion of the fluids used there also contain biocides.

The main purposes of metalworking fluids are to reduce friction, remove heat and clear chips. Fluids are almost always used in closed or semi-open systems where fluids are recirculated and filtered to remove chips.

Biocides are added as preservatives to metalworking fluids based on emulsions, synthetic or semi-synthetic fluids, and fluids based on pure vegetable oils. Metalworking fluids based on pure mineral oils and solvent-based fluids are generally free of biocides.

In addition to their use as preservatives, biocides are also used for extensive disinfection of systems through maintenance and replacement of fluids. Biocides are strictly used as a disinfectant, not as a preservative for this application.
