Microbiology Analysis
The skin and mucous membranes are protected from microbial attack by a natural mechanical barrier and various defense mechanisms. In case of damage, slight problems may occur due to the effect of some cosmetics that may increase microbial infection.
This can have particularly undesirable results when cosmetics are used around the eyes, mucous membranes in general, damaged skin, children under 3 years old, the elderly and people with compromised immune systems. As a result, two separate cosmetic product categories are defined in the microbiological quality control limits:
Category 1: Products specially designed for children under 3 years of age, for use around the eyes and mucous membranes.
Category 2: Other products.
Microbial contaminants generally come from two different origins:
- During production and filling and during consumer use of the cosmetic product
- From the opening of the cosmetic unit to the end use of the product by consumers
Reasons to protect cosmetics from microorganisms:
- Ensuring the microbial safety of cosmetics for the consumer
- Maintaining the intended quality and characteristics of the product
- Approving hygienic and high-quality use
