Product Type 17: Piscicides

Herbicides are biocidal products used to control fish.

Pesticides may be applied to water bodies contaminated with undesirable fish, the predator-prey balance may be disturbed, or some species may become overgrown and stunted.

Herbicides can also be used in fish farm ponds after the fish are harvested so that newly added young fish are not eaten by the remaining overgrown fish.

Only very limited information is available on the actual use of pesticides.

He reported that the application of fish killers is limited to aquaculture. Applications are the use of feeds (eg pellets) and liquids.

Fish killers are generally used for the following purposes.

a) control and eradication of the Atlantic salmon parasite Gyrodactylus salaris and similar pests;
b) controlling the spread of invasive aquatic animal species such as minnow (Phoxinus phoxinus); and
c) Elimination of exotic species, if any, considered to threaten the biodiversity of aquatic fauna and native populations
