Product Type 11: Preservatives for liquid-cooling and processing systems
Liquids used in cooling and processing systems, with the control of harmful organisms such as microbes, algae and mussels.
Biocides are applied to systems either to preserve fluids (control of microorganisms) or to disinfect systems (to kill microorganisms).
Although biocides in semi-open systems act as both preservatives and disinfectants, biocides used for the protection of liquid cooling system or air-conditioning systems are included here.
Liquid systems can be organized into three types: single pass cooling systems, open recirculation systems and closed recirculation systems.
It can be used for single pass cooling systems, power plants and industrial plants. Open recirculation systems are mainly used in the food processing and pharmaceutical industries and for cooling water in large air conditioning systems.
The water in these systems is cooled in open cooling towers. In these systems, biocides are usually administered once or twice a week at a shock dosage. Closed systems include district heating systems and fluid systems of air conditioning systems.
Biocides are added continuously. Open machining systems are used for pressure casting and washing of semi-finished products and tolls. Microbial growth can also be a problem in these systems, but the use of biocides to control growth in these systems is not as common as in the food processing and pharmaceutical industries.
In air-conditioning systems with open circulation cooling water, biocides can also be applied to control pathogenic bacteria; especially some Legionella species. Some of the applied biocides are particularly effective in controlling these organisms and are often used in hospital air-conditioning systems.
