Product Type 20: Control of other vertebrates
Products in this group are used for the control of vertebrates other than rodents (product type 14, product type comprising the order Rodentia), fish (product type 17) and birds (product type 15). Products that control animals with an attractive or repellent effect are included in product type 19.
It is used for the control of the European mole (Talpa europaea). However, the product type may also include biocides for fox, rabbit and hare control.
A review of the methods used to control moles in the European Union shows that the studied fumigants are used, in addition, poisonous baits are used.
Exposure
It is assumed that mole control agents are used only by authorized personnel or, in some cases, by those who have taken a course in the handling of rodenticides. The user will use authorized protective equipment, including plastic gloves and a gas mask.
Agents work with fumigation. Aluminum phosphide tablets are placed underground in mole galleries and phosphine fumes are released when the tablets come into contact with moisture. Phosphine fumes are toxic to all higher animals exposed to the smoke. The user may be accidentally exposed to fumes, but the risk of misuse should be minimal.
The only risk for humans and other animals to be exposed to the gas is if they are too close to the user's area. It is assumed that the user is certain that all gases have been decontaminated before leaving the area.
All packaging should be disposed of as hazardous waste.
