Product Type 12: Slimicides

Product Type 12: Slimicides

Slimicides are used for the prevention or control of slime growth on materials, equipment and structures used in industrial processes, eg. on wood and pulp and porous sand layers in oil extraction.

- Pulp and paper

With the biocidal control of microorganisms in the pulp, slimicides are added to the pulp to prevent slime formation during pulping. This can be achieved with a continuous supply of slimicide, or with a single decontamination or repeated slug treatment at high doses. Slime formation can also be controlled by other agents such as enzymes, and there seems to be a trend towards the use of these other agents.

- Petroleum extraction, processing and storage

Biocides are used for three purposes in oil extraction:

• Control of mud-forming microorganisms in water-based drilling mud during storage (when necessary);
• Control of hydrogen sulfide formation by sulfate-reducing bacteria by oil extraction;
• Control of microbial growth and hydrogen sulfide formation in oil pipelines.

During the storage of fuels, especially diesel and fuel oils, if water enters the tanks, slime formation may occur by microorganisms. Biocides are not added as inhibitors to the fuel, but the preventive addition of biocides is done to some extent by fuel tank owners; eg on ferries. Biocides are most commonly used only when an infected tank is to be disinfected.
