Product Type 21: Antifouling products

Anti-poisoning products are used to control the growth and establishment of contaminating organisms (germs and higher plant or animal species) on ships, aquaculture equipment, or other structures used in water. Contamination occurs in both salt and fresh water, but the fouling process is faster in saltwater and there are more polluting organisms in saltwater.

The following uses are known for anti-poisoning products: Ship hulls, nets in fish farms, aquaculture equipment other than fishing nets (such as lobster pots), buoys and other small objects, sluice gates, harbor structures, e.g. cooling systems, marine sensors and offshore structures.

The most important area of use for toxic products is in the hulls of pleasure boats and commercial ships. The worldwide demand for this use is about 95% of the total demand. On ships, antifouling paint is applied to the hull below the waterline, and active substances are continuously released into the water during use.

By volume of use, use in offshore structures such as drilling platforms is the most important after use in ship hulls, with worldwide demand for this use being approximately 2.5% of the total.
