Product Type 14: Rodenticides
Rodenticides are used for the control of mice, rats or other rodents. Products used to control mice, rats and other rodents are used either as food poison or gas. When used as an ingestion poison, biocides are applied to corn or placed in a block of edible material or dispersed as a powder in areas where the vermin has moved.
Human exposure:
The character and extent of possible human exposure depend to a large extent on the type of product and thus the actual use.
Most commonly, rodenticides are applied outdoors; in public and private areas, water banks, in and around sewer systems and around waste disposal sites and landfills. The main formulation for outdoor use is feed, for example, impregnated grain and corn or wax blocks and tracking powders (contact powder). Fumigation is an outdoor technique used to combat moles and in some cases water rats by producing poisonous phosphine gas in burrows.
Rodenticides are also applied, but more rarely indoors. Indoor use of rodenticides is allowed in industrial facilities (food industry, transportation facilities, animal shelters, barns and barns) if necessary routines and precautions are taken. Formulations include feeds (ready-to-use feeds), liquid drinking poison, and concentrates for feed preparation.
In most cases, a permit is required meaning that the handling of mice and other rodents is in most cases carried out by professionals or at least trained persons. However, there are some products that can be used by non-professionals to combat rats.
With regard to human exposure, practices by non-professionals often mean a higher risk of exposure than professionals undertaking the same activity. While non-professionals may be at (limited) risk when they use impregnated grain or wax blocks to control rats, professionals' highest exposure risk occurs when applying contact powders using dust blowers.
The risk of human exposure during the application phase is greatest unless accidental access to rodenticides (eg by children) is considered during use.
