Product Type 22: Embalming and taxidermist fluids
The product type includes products used for disinfection and preservation of human or animal corpses or parts thereof. The product type can be organized into two subtypes:
• Embalming fluids for humans;
People who die are mummified (preserved) for two main reasons:
• Medical corpse donation eg. for the education of medical students
• Preservation of bodies for different situations: transport across state lines or for a distance of more than 600 km, transport by air, burial more than 48 hours after death, or death by an infectious disease.
With mummification, a liquid (in most cases formaldehyde) is injected into the body while blood is removed.
• Embalming and taxidermy fluids for animals.
Animals are protected by both 'dry' preservation and 'wet' preservation, ie immersion in protective liquids.
Animal cadavers are protected by 'wet protection' for two main reasons: taxonomic studies and monitoring programs and training of veterinary students. The latter practice is in many ways similar to the preservation of human corpses for educational purposes.
For taxidermy, which is the art of placing or reproducing vertebrate animal specimens, both 'wet preservation' and 'dry preservation' are applied. Animal protection concerns both small and large mammals, fish, birds and reptiles. Generally the main steps in the conservation of large mammals are, for example: skinning, butt removal, washing, rinsing, dry salting, brine/pickling solution, re-meat removal, neutralization, tanning, rinsing, oiling and breaking the hide.
