Protective Efficacy Test
The effectiveness of preserving a cosmetic product under development should be empirically evaluated to ensure microbial stability and protection during storage and use. This can be done with a protective efficacy test. The latter is mandatory for all cosmetic products that may deteriorate or pose a risk of infecting the consumer under normal conditions of storage and use.
The preservative efficacy test or “Challenge Test” is based on the assessment of the reduction in contamination from artificial contamination of the finished product and subsequently to levels that meet the microbial limits set for Categories 1 and 2.
• Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 9027)
• Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 6538)
• Escherichia coli (ATCC 8739)
• Candida albicans (ATCC 10231)
• Aspergillus brasiliensis (ATCC 16404)
The protective activities of cosmetic products are tested using the microorganisms mentioned above. By determining the microbial activity of preservatives or any other compound in the finished cosmetics, it is clarified whether the product is safe for users.
