Product Type 7: Film preservatives
Film preservatives are products used for the protection of films or coatings by controlling microbial degradation to preserve the initial properties of the surface of materials or objects such as paints, plastic products, sealants, masonry adhesives, binders, papers, artwork.
- Paints
The main application area is film protectors in paints. Film protectors are used to control microbial (mainly fungal) degradation of the paint film and to protect most types of topcoats used in outdoor applications. Preservatives are used for both water-based paints and solvent-based paints.
- Plastic products
Plastic products are generally not protected against microbial degradation, but biocides can be added to plastics containing plasticizers to prevent microbial growth on the surface. During the use of the plastic product, the plasticizer will spread to the surface and adhere to the plasticizer in a humid environment, microorganisms, especially fungi, which use the plasticizer as a carbon source. In some flooring products, a biocide is added for antiseptic reasons to prevent the growth of unwanted bacteria on the surface. Plasticizers and other degradable additives can be added to different plastics, but soft PVC seems to make up the bulk of the protected plastic. The main areas of application for soft PVC containing fungicides are roofing foils, tarpaulins, bath curtains and tents made of PVC coated fabric or reinforced PVC foil, and some types of PVC flooring for bathrooms, buses and bathrooms (vinyl flooring).
- Sealants, fillers
Fungicides are mainly added as film preservatives to sealants and fillers for application in wet rooms.
