Determination of o-Phthalaldehyde (OPA)

Determination of o-Phthalaldehyde (OPA)

O-Phthalaldehyde (OPA), which is used as an alternative to glutaraldehyde, is used in the sterilization of dental and medical instruments. It has been claimed to be an alternative to glutaraldehyde because it has a strong and effective bactericidal character.

Advantages over glutenaldehyde:
- Almost odorless
- Stable
- Effective over a wide pH range of 3-9
- Does not irritate eyes and nasal passages

Because it is an effective biocide, it has been stated that most bacterial cells have little chance of developing resistance to biocidal concentrations in use. OPA has strong biocidal effect. The amount and effectiveness of the biocidal products used are tested.
