Determination of pH in Biocidal Products

Physical and chemical tests are important in the licensing process of biocidal products. One of the physical tests that must be performed is the pH Test. The formulation of the product is also important when performing the pH test.

If the biocidal product contains water, the pH value must be determined directly on the product.
If the biocidal product does not contain solids or water, the pH value can be determined from its 1% aqueous solution.

Biocidal If the pH value of the product is ≤4, acidity test is performed, and if it is >10, alkalinity test is performed. Product specifications should be adjusted according to pH value. The degree of acidity and alkalinity in biocidal products is a factor that affects the disinfectant performance and selection of the product.

The pH value should be specified in the Biocidal Product specification document to comply with the following ranges:
• pH≤4
• 4<pH≤7
• 7<pH≤10
• pH>10
