Formaldehyde Analysis in Biocidal Products
Many commercially available bactericides are classified as formaldehyde-releasing biocidal products. In other words, it means that they release a small amount of formaldehyde under certain conditions. This is the way biocidal products affect bacteria.Although formaldehyde-releasing biocidal products are effective, their use may be restricted or prohibited in some cases. Formaldehyde was reclassified as a category 1b H350 carcinogen and a category 2 mutagen by ECHA (European Chemicals Agency) in 2015. It is formed when formaldehyde comes into contact under suitable conditions. For this reason, it has been recommended by the ECHA Risk Assessment Committee (RAC) to classify it in the same way as formaldehyde.
As a result, considering the side effects of formaldehyde, the presence and amount of formaldehyde in biocidal products has become an important issue. For this reason, it is analyzed as an active ingredient in the registration of biocidal products.
