Testing formaldehyde in cosmetics or personal care products
Formaldehyde, also known as formalin, has been used as a preservative in cosmetic products. However, according to DIMDI, it is subject to many restrictions and bans because it is considered as a Class A potentially harmful substance.Formaldehyde was classified as a category 1B CMR substance in 2019 under the Regulation (EU) 2019/8311 published to amend the Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 Annex II, III and V. Thus, formaldehyde entered the list of prohibited substances in Europe. It is not considered a formaldehyde releaser unless it exceeds 0.05% in finished products.
One of the tests carried out to ensure safety in cosmetics and personal care products and to determine compliance with the relevant regulations and standards is the determination of formaldehyde. Determination of Formaldehyde in Cosmetics or Personal Care Products can be performed both in raw materials and in finished products such as creams, lotions, shampoos, soaps, various raw materials.
